Beholding

When the Children of Israel rebelled and were bitten by fiery serpents and begin to die, they were told to look and behold the brazen serpent on the pole. When they did this act of obedience, they were healed!
Today we are told to look and behold Jesus on the cross and we will be healed, find new life, and will be made new.
In John 3 why does Jesus compare himself to the brazen serpent? Why was he lifted up on a cross like the snake in the wilderness? Why, like them, are we told to behold him on the pole? What does beholding mean?
Giving thought and heart meditation to these truths, and finding the answers to these questions, will bring the peace, healing, and new life that we seek.
