The Key to Relating to Others
John Maxwell says it plainly:
“Putting yourself in someone else's place instead of putting them in their place.”
Most conflict happens because we assume before we understand. We judge motives. We react quickly. We correct before we connect.
Putting someone in their place creates distance.
Putting yourself in their place creates understanding.
It means asking: What might they be carrying? What pressure are they under? What am I not seeing?
Empathy does not remove truth or accountability. It simply ensures that understanding comes first.
If you want stronger relationships — at home, in ministry, in leadership — start here.
Understand before you correct.
That is the key.
